In 2016, help us gain The Predella of Master of Alcira!
One of the major artists of the Spanish Renaissance.
Who is the Master of Alcira?
Anonymous artist active in Valencia in Spain in the years 1520-1530, the painter was probably a disciple of Hernando Yañez de la Almedina and Hernando de Los Llanos who perpetuated the style of Leonardo da Vinci and is part of the Renaissance movement in the Iberian Peninsula.
In any case, this master is stylistically related with Macip Vicente, the father of Joan de Joanes, a leading representative of the sixteenth century at Valencia’s school. The work of several hands can be seen in the performance of the different panels, common practice in workshops at that time. Many of Master Alcira's work are stored within Escuelas Pías Gandia or at the Dublin museum, Ireland (Apparition of the Virgin to Saint Jacques, Saint Jacques with Hermogenes, Holy descent). The style of the Master of Alcira is characterized by great serenity, full forms and hieratic expressions as well as a certain taste for arranged architectures in the backgrounds.

The predella: altarpiece element

It is a vertical building with a painted or carved decoration, placed on an altar or withdrawal thereof. Spain continues until the mid-eighteenth century the tradition of great polyptychs storey, very spectacular, rich ornamentation, which illustrate the sacred texts of the Bible.
The piece presented to subscription is an underbody altarpiece, a predella. It is composed of five panels of wood, preserved, rare thing, in their original architecture.
The iconography of the predella of Master of Alcira
Composed of five panels kept in their architecture, it is attributed to an anonymous artist, active in Valencia, Spain in the 1520-1530s. This painter was probably a disciple of Hernando Yañez de la Almedina and Hernando de Los Llanos who both perpetuated Leonardo da Vinci’s style. He’s part of the Renaissance movement in the Iberian Peninsula. In any case, this master is stylistically related with Macip Vicente, the father of Joan de Joanes, a leading representative of the sixteenth century Valencia’s school.
The panels represent a sequence of characters in sacred history or of the holy martyrs: Santa Engracia and St. Jacques represented as soldier, Penitent Saint Jerome, the Lamentation of the Dead Christ,King David and Saint Roch, two unidentified Holy martyrs Saints.
The work of several hands can be seen in the performance of the different panels, common practice in workshops at that time.
